Why Things Matter

K-cab is a SMS-based service for calling taxicabs, which is available in Iwate prefecture. The service can also be used with QR codes that encode location information. Vending machines that bear such location-encoded QR codes are being installed in varous places in the prefecture so that people can easily call a cab just by taking a picture of a QR code with their camera phones and connecting to the K-cabs’ taxicab dispatch website.

This may sound attractive to whoever has the experience of being unable to tell where one is when calling a taxicab. Would also be highly useful for individuals with a speech handicap.

Mit einem multimedialen Spieltisch für das Wohnzimmer will HP die ganze Familie an einen Tisch bringen.

Mit dem interaktiven Couchtisch “Misto” haben die Forscher der HP Labs in einen spielerischen Ansatz eines Home-Entertainment-Systems.

Die Tischplatte bildet ein großes Touch-Screen-Display, auf dem digitale Fotoalben angesehen, Brettspiele mit den Fingern gespielt oder etwa eine Landkarte studiert werden kann.

Die Idee von HP ist, dass Misto von mehreren Personen gleichzeitig in gemütlicher Atmosphäre genutzt werden kann.

In Misto ist ein herkömmlicher Desktop-PC integriert, der mit spezieller Interface-Management-Software ausgestattet ist.

Natürlich ist der Tisch wasser- bzw. Kaffeedicht und kann somit auch als ganz normaler Wohnzimmertisch genutzt werden.

Ob, wann und zu welchem Preis der Couchtisch-Computer auf den Markt kommen wird, steht derzeit aber noch in den Sternen.

For the past year and a half The Botmatrix collaborated with The Les Freres Corbusier theater company on their latest play Heddatron, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s play Hedda Gabler complete with 5 robots. The Botmatrix will discuss their experiences collaborating, designing and building the robots for the theatrical run.

In the play, the robots’ lines are delivered using prerecorded text to speech. Two of them are life-size tin men who hover behind Jane and transport her in an enchanted world ruled by robots. The cast includes a scurrying suitcase-like creature in a white wig (for Ibsen’s Judge Brack); a balletic walking broom (as the maid, Berta); a silver two-sided daguerreotype figure (as Auntie Julie); and a creeping cluster of vine leaves.
