Studies about camera phone usage

Friday, August 11th, 2006

I read some interesting articles and studies about camera phone usage recently. To keep the most important parts in mind, I have to sum them up.
a. Tim Kindberg; Spasojevic, M. et al. (2005) “I Saw This and Thought of You: Some Social Uses of Camera Phones”

Good taxonomy of image capture.

For each of the 295 captured images (the remaining 25 were received), we recorded up to two reasons why the subject said they captured it. There were broadly two different dimensions along which subjects’ intentions at capture varied. The first dimension was whether an image was taken for an “affective” reason (e.g. emotional) or a functional reason (i.e. to support the accomplishment of a particular task). The second dimension was that of “social” (i.e. intended for sharing with others) versus “individual”, where no sharing was intended. Further, when we look more closely at social uses, these can be broadly broken down into sharing with people who were co-present at the time of image capture versus sharing with people who were not physically co-present. Defining the scope - online/offline connection, camera phone usage, identity formation and more…

When I first thought about what I wanted to write in this blog, I came up with a more general approach of things I’m interested in, which can be found here. My main goal was to combine the stuff I learned at university (especially sociology) with my experience at work in an internet agency. The second step was to find a “real” topic to focus on. The framework I developed first was good enough to get me some orientation, organize this blog (esp. categories) and find a focus. It consists of five basic elements: a. theory, b. technical progress and c. social phenomena, which lead to d. a proper methodology and e. a tangible projects. (more…)
